The Côte-Rôtie vineyard, twenty minutes from Lyon
The northern Rhône vineyards start twenty minutes from Lyon by train. It is the closest vineyard to the city, and the least visited of the three that surround it.
In a half-day, there is time to grasp the essentials: slopes so steep they are worked by hand, and a syrah that has no equivalent anywhere else.
Vineyard visit and barrel tasting
The heart of the visit takes place at a family estate in Côte-Rôtie, where you taste straight from the barrel. That is where you understand what blending is: the same wine, drawn from two different casks, does not taste the same.
A chapel and a misnamed village, between two vineyards
The route passes a three-hundred-year-old chapel hidden in the forest, then a village whose name was changed by mistake long ago, a story tied to an old legend of the Rhône valley, which your Insider will tell better than we can.

What is a barrel tasting?
The wine is drawn straight from the cask, before blending and bottling. It is how the winemaker tastes his own work, and it shows how a wine is built.
What is the difference with the full day?
The full day goes up to four estates, covers Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph, and includes lunch. The half-day focuses on Côte-Rôtie.
How do we get to the vineyard?
By train from Lyon to Vienne, twenty minutes, ticket included. A private car transfer is available as an option.
